Roofing FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Why do you tear off the shingles instead of overlay the new shingles over the old? Code in most central and southern Minnesota counties require tear off of pre-existing shingles. By tearing off your shingles, we unfold problem areas like rot, broken and delaminated decking. We are able to correct any issues at that time.2. What is my Field Supervisors responsibility? Our Field Supervisors supervise your construction project. They are typically on the job site 2-3 times per day. We make sure that there is always a crew leader on site for supervision during the remainder of the project. Supervision helps with quality control. During installation, we ensure that your landscaping and home are protected during installation. *We include a Construction Process form for you for other important items. We ask all our homeowners to inform their Field Supervisor of any special attention areas to be cautious of around their home. 3. Will I have any language barriers with your workers? We make certain that there is someone on site at all times that speaks English. Even though your Field Supervisor is usually a phone call away, it is always comforting for you to be able to speak to the Crew Leader if you have a question or comment.4. Why is it beneficial that Elite Exteriors removes the old nails on my roof? When we tear off the old shingles, we remove the existing nails. This guarantees a flat, clean nailing surface. Old nails can cut through your new ice & water shield or felt that is supposed to protect your roof from water infiltration. Also, this could be dangerous if we use pneumatic guns and a new nail contacts the old nail. It could explode and backfire the nail.5. Why is it so important that Elite Exteriors cleans the roof decking? Cleaning off the roof decking (or wood) after the tear off is essential. We either sweep or blow off the extra debris lying on the roof deck. This will properly adhere the ice & water shield to the roof deck. If there is excessive dust and granules on the roof decking from the tear off, the membrane from the leak barrier will not adhere to the deck surface, resulting in lack of water protection for your home.6. What is Ice & Water Shield and where is it installed?Ice & water shield is installed at all eaves of your roof and must meet at least 24 inside the wall line. This is to help protect the inside of your home from water intrusion. Elite Exteriors exceeds code on this area, as we want you to feel confident that your home is fully protected.7. Why do I need Drip Edge on my home?Drip edge is an important part of the roofing installation process. It keeps wind driven rain from infiltrating into the roof. It also whisks the rain away. The drip edge is installed under the leak barrier at the eaves of the roof. It is also installed over the felt on the rakes of the roof. This system will keep the interior of your house dry.8. Why does Elite Exteriors use chalk lines on my roof?We make several chalk lines while installing your roof. This ensures the shingles are consistently horizontally straight.9. Why do I need Starter installed on my home?Starter is required to be installed on the eaves of the roofline. Unlike some other contractors, we install it on the entire perimeter of the house. The starter has a seal strip close to the edge, which makes the shingle more durable to high winds. It also provides straight lines and clean-cut edges at the gable of your roof.10. Why does Elite Exteriors offset the shingles?Every shingle type has a specific amount that needs to be cut off per course. This allows for proper water flow and color patterns to match up accurately.11. What is your quality control for the installation of my roof?Elite Exteriors fills out an inspection checklist at the end of each project and places it on your door. Also, your Field Supervisor will be at the job site several times during the day to manage your project and verify that the construction project is going as planned.
